I currently have Comcast High-Speed Broadband. Is the SBC DSL faster? My brother wants to change service but I don't want slower internet.

since DSL is based on the quality of your phone lines I would assume that changing providers wouldnt show much of a difference. this is of course an assumption as I have never used DSL b4 :)
the only way to compare this without actually running one and then the other is check the company websites for specified upload/download speeds in your area maybe.

i wouldnt suggest DSL
its a bitch to setup and maintain. dont buy it from Verizon whatever you do. took me 3 months to get it set up and then we had to get new filters so that was another few weeks delivery then they went thru a period when instead of 1.7 mpbs it was 3. although it still isnt 1.7 mbps, more like 1.3.

switching from cable to dsl was the biggest mistake my dad has made reguarding our computers. ever.

I find my Bellsouth Dsl a breeze to setup and maintain so providers differ. I don't think DSL is fater then Cable but my DSL (with Bellsouth) seems more secure than people I know with cable.

Depends on the options they give you. Yes it is faster and no it is slower. Also, DSL breaks down every once in a while, like ever other month or two months I think. My friend has it. For DSL, don't you just have to install some weird CD? Anyway, I can't get DSL, so I'm getting Comcast...eventually...

Unfortunately there is no cut and dry answer to this question. In some areas dsl may very well be the better choice over cable, in other areas cable might be the best choice; it all depends on where you live and how your teleco and cable provider does business.

I have dsl and aside from a few connection problems a month or two back, it is quite stable and problem-less. Generally, dsl suffers more loss of speed due to overhead than cable, for example, my 2Mbit downstream ends up being about 1.7Mbit when it reaches my house, but I also live pretty damn far from the central office which is a factor in how much throughput will be lost due to overhead.

Best advice I can give is to find someone in your area who has SBC dsl and ask them about the speed, reliability, tech support, etc, to get an idea of how well they run their service in your town.
