I first got interested in this when I’d log onto a website and a ‘popup’ would display my IP address. It would tell me to go to ******.com to download their software to stay protected.

I would then close my browser, scan for the obvious and, so far, have had no problems.

Recently, I did a search for IP Address Hiding and found one that looked promising:
http://www.hide-my-ip.com/hidemyip.shtml

However, the flipside of this coin is this:
Quote:
Un-ban Yourself From Forums and Message Boards - Have you been banned from a forum or message board? No problem! Use Hide My IP to change your IP and clear your browser cookies, allowing you to access any website that has banned you such as eBay, Craigslist, and many browser-based games.

That raised the question; do the MPC gurus have a workaround for such things? I can’t imagine anything but total anarchy if such software exists!

Personally, I just want to surf the web without some unscrupulous employee from a reputable website scamming my IP address. However, I can’t help but thinking how something like that software may affect a forum!

I welcome all thoughts and opinions on this subject!

This isn't new technology bro, and we have delt with banning people that would just change their IP and then make a new account. Want to know how we delt with it? We banned the user again, and each time after when they made another account. There have only been a few very rare situations where an IP ban was necessary in the decade+ of our hsitory on the tubes.

People don't realise that it is quite easy to spot a returning troll ... their use of language always gives them away.

We don't find returned banned people because of their IPs .. we find them because of their posts. Their IPs just confirm our suspicions.

Of course, it is possible that a troll will return, stay under our radar, not break any rules and hide from our wrath. This troll may feel very cunning .. they evaded their ban .. but, in truth, all they've done is learned to conform to the rules of the forum. That's all we really want, in the end.

Man… you’d think that after six years, this grasshopper would have learned to not underestimate the MPC Brigade! :D

So if you evade a ban, come back following the rules, you can stay?

Is this stupid question day?

Yes, you're right ... if the mods don't know that you've broken a rule, you won't be punished for it. Obviously.

Also, if you don't get caught speeding, you don't have to pay any fines!

I just didn't write out my entire thought.

After all of that and they do find out, what then?
