I need a good hosting service for a file server. It would just be nice for a single repository for all my crap, and I don't want to host it myself. Any tips?

Ditto, I use the hell out of it for both work and home files.

The issue is that I need a lot of storage. I'm essentially using it not only for media, but as an offsite backup source for most of my family's PCs.

Please provide sufficient details so we can actually answer your question.

How much storage do you need? How much are you willing to pay?

I'll also have an admin move this post to the Internet Truckstop where it belongs.

Probably 1TB of storage, bandwidth can be low (as long as speeds are decent)

The cost will be mitigated between the people who want to use it for backups. I'd say less than $50 a month.

I did find this site, http://www.a2hosting.com/services/, but I have no idea about their reputation.

Msn/hotmail gives you 25 gigs free (Skydrive). I just backed up a lot of my pictures that way.
No where near a TB but very helpful. Not sure if new accounts get that much or because I've had that account forever it's what I have.

Honestly, a terabyte is more than I've ever needed so I'm not familiar with that market.

A quick google search turned up quite a few options, though. These guys offer a decent price

From what I've seen, you're not going to find a terabyte of storage under $100/mnth, but I admit that I haven't looked too deeply into this.

I use it and it works great.

If all you want is an FTP dumpbucket, you can get any web hosting plan inexpensively and just ftp in.

I never thought of just piggybacking on a web host....

This seems like the most viable solution thus far: http://www.inmotionhosting.com/hostingplans.html

Yup, just make sure its not against their TOS to use them as a file hosting service.

Poop. Scanned the TOS on a few sites, and FTP use is against more of them.

This one popped out, though: http://www.siteground.com/ftp-hosting.htm

FTP space bought at the previous site.

Here's a hint: at the page for all your payment info, try and leave - you get 80% off!

It seems to be a fine host for space, unlimited bandwidth and space, but a 150000 file limit, which is plenty

Plus, its a web host, so unlimited FTP and a site.

Siteground is working pretty well. The speeds are OK, but getting unlimited space and bandwidth for $24 a year is unbeatable.
