I'm thinking of setting up a website and Id like to know how to best check if the domain is taken yet without one of those bots realizing someone has interest and registering it to hold it hostage. Advice?

No idea .. but I do know that jipstyle.com has been 'occupied' for over a fucking decade .. so I'm not the best person to answer your question.

One day, I will drive down to:
31 Surfbird Lane
Aliso Viejo, California 92656
United States

And cockpunch Mr. Thomas Yu for stealing my little section of the internet.

You and me both. Mr urmumsacows lastname (5 letters) wasnt taken for several years. I kept putting it off and putting it off thinking it would be 3+ years before i got around to building a server and would end up costing me $30+ ... stupid me Im pretty sure a bot heard about one of my searches and reged it. Fuck i just checked and it has a "for sale" sign.

Luckily that's not what I'm looking for atm. I think i found a generic whois server that will tell me. Other than that all I can think of is a dns query at one of the mains... but im paranoid.

eh....I don't know why you couldn't just use whois within your favorite distro at the CLI...

I believe that just defaults to whatever name server you're using for everyday activities.

Pick me up along the way. The owner of spidermonkey.com is down there too.

And just go to godaddy and type it in bro. I've never had a problem obtaining any of my domains.

Makes me think that he is/was a member of Delphi and followed us here.

Too bad we can't do IP searches to match post locations to ... oh ... wait.

Interesting, if I go here I can back order for my own domain name for only $49.95. That is so nice of them. :)

If you go to just about any provider like this one you can see if it is taken, much like a DNS lookup with who is. If I go to jipstyle.com I get a bunch of links to jeep parts. Go figure.
