Installing PHP

Hi All,

In a recent decision to learn myself more than HTML and simple Flash, I gained the initiative to teach myself PHP. I was told by a few friends that it wasn't too hard to learn, but at the same time wicked powerful.

Sooooo, I strolled over to php.net, and downloaded the windows binary (I'm on XP) for version 4.3.8 (yes, I know that v5 is out, but I am planning on taking a class from New Horizons that covers v4).

In any event, I read through the readme, installed MySQL and got that up and running, and I have IIS 5.1 running, since I have previously been hosting my own website.

I thought that I had installed all of the PHP stuff correctly, but apparently not. I checked out a couple websites (phpbuilder.com (?), and a page on O'Reilly). According to the walkthroughs that I have read, it appears that I have everything installed correctly. Although, I cannot get any *.php pages to open.

So, what I'm asking is, can anyone help me to install PHP? Post a good link that explains it, or any other help would be more than appreciated!

i thought the stuff at php.net is only for running servers with php pages. if you're just viewing them, there shouldn't be a problem.

Hmmmm. I know on Linux that you have to compile Apache with PHP support...as well as some other config options to let your web server know that .PHP is a valid extension

I'm able to view other people's php pages on the web with no problem. I'm actually trying to create my own php pages on my personal web server.

I think that I've already done this....I set up the settings in IIS for php to use php.exe to read the code. But no luck so far. I ordered a book specifically for php and mysql, so hopefully this will help me.
