Trolling about some newsgroups I'm starting to see spam about software that is supposed to mask one's IP address making everything you do on the web invisible.
Now I'm not too smart about such things (I come to forums like this to get in touch with people who know more than I do), but it seems to me that your IP address is given by the ISP and nothing on one's computer can change or mask that.
So can someone tell me if there is any truth behind such software claims?

Also, one thing I've never been able to grasp is IRC. Might someone be able to point out a site that a newbie in DUH-land might go to to get started?
Many thanks in advance.

Proxies can help though

Cow's right. I think there are some 'anonymous' services out there that will mask you, but its thru a proxy server.

I personally don't see the need to hide your IP unless you're trying to do 'not-so-nice' things.

Here is an IRC Tutorial. Personally IRC does nothing to blow my skirt up...I guess it was cool 20 years ago ;). but sitting idle in channels I tend to miss alot of stuff...IM is much more effective (IMO).

I found it handy (years ago) for Linux help...but now with the HUGE amount of BBs around (like this one)...I no longer find them as useful.

Good luck!

There is a program out there by Steganos that does something like that. Im not sure exactly what it does though. I installed it once just to play with it. When i logged into a friends forums it showed me under a random IP addy and when i checked my IP at www.whatsmyip.com it came up as a random number too. Once i turned the software off it was back to my normal charter IP info.

Like i said, i dont know what exactly it did or how it worked, but it was a neat program. The software itself was kinda cool looking. Map of the world and it had your IP bouncing from country to country, lol. PM me if you want more info on it.
