Maximum PC

I'm looking for an app that will let me separate out my Facebook friends into categories similar to a forum setting. In other words, I want to tag my friends with labels, and then only read posts with those tags.

For example, I would tag people that I meet on the MaximumPC forums with "1337", and friends that I meet on DeviantArt with "Deviants". People could be tagged to multiple groups, or only one. That way, if one day I only want to talk to MPC friends, I wouldn't have to sort through all the DA friends to find the MPC ones.

The same should work in reverse: posts that I make should only be sent to the tagged groups instead of everyone. It should also allow me to choose to send a message to everyone, like it works by default in Facebook.

I'm tired of not posting anything because I don't want one group or another to be offended or just not understand stuff that I write. I want stuff that I post on Facebook to be targeted to specific people. This would let me find even more like-minded people with similar specific interests.

If I can't find an app, I'll post a rant about it on YouTube.

The functionality is already there. In the top right, click "Account" then "Edit Friends" and then on the left side "All Connections." Next to each friend is a button to add that friend to a list, which you can also use to create a new list. And the ability to only allow certain people to see certain posts is already there too. But I'll let you find that on your own.

Perhaps I'll post a rant on youtube about people demanding things that have always been there.

I already did that before I wrote the first post, alan2308. It took forever because there are no little checkboxes next to the friends names so you can create a list all at once. It doesn't let you view multiple lists/categories at once, either.

Other forum-ish features I'm looking for include little numbers at the bottom of the "thread" that let you see oldest posts, newest posts, or a range of posts inbetween, just like the one you're on right now. Instead, with Facebook (and twitter does this too), you have to click "view more" or whatever, and then you get those three stupid bars that move forever and don't load anything.

Maybe the problem here isn't the lists feature of Facebook, maybe its just time to clean out your friends list.



Facebook isn't a forum and was never meant to be a forum. A simple little FB app isn't going to be able to change the fundamental behavior of the site like that.

I did some searching and found two things that you may like.

Friend Organizer. Give it a shot, may do what you want. Haven't used it myself though.

Scrapboy. Easier to post/chat on Facebook.

hackman2007, I took Friend Organizer for a spin. Not a happy experience. It would only show up on my Profile page. The worst thing about it is that has ads in it, and it doesn't let you use the features in it at all. As far as I'm concerned, the app is useless. It does have the check boxes, but that can't save this junk app. Scrapboy has no feature that would make me want to use it. It's basically just a little extension for Facebook, it doesn't add that much new to it. Definitely no forum-y stuff.

Alright, I got back into Facebook and looked around some more. I found a checklist method of adding friends to a list. You have to go to Account> Edit Friends> Pages > Create New List. Note that Pages is broken--when I clicked it, I only got the three alternating bars of doom and the whirling blue froot loop of despair. You can then access Pages by refreshing the page. Once there, you can make your list via check boxes.

The only thing that lists do is show you links to people within that list, and separate out your friends inside of Chat. Lists are then accessible by going to your Home page > little Friends link thing on the left > your lists are displayed in a drop down menu > friends within that list only show their status updates, etc.

I also want to distribute messages to just those people on the list. alan2309 mentioned that "the ability to only allow certain people to see certain posts is already there too". I looked around but didn't see a way to do this. You can change who is able to see messages by changing Privacy Settings. That lets you allow Friends, Networks, or Everyone to see messages. I'm talking more about positive filters of chosen recipients.

Groups sort of provide a mini-forum where people opt in to a discussion. You make a Group page and you set it so that only your friends can post on it. It's nothing more than a profile page without your name on it. What I want is a way to share Lists so that everyone knows who else is on that list and can add people that they want to that list. It's less exclusive than your own private List. Currently, your own Lists are hidden from everyone else and there's no way to share them.

Saw your posts. I am looking for the same sort of thing. The built in list handling is nice, but insufficient. Since I haven't found what I am looking for I am thinking about writing my own app to do it. I have written apps that use the FB api before.
