Kinda surprised no one picked up on this.

Cryptic/Atari is in the Open Beta for Star Trek Online
http://startrekonline.com

And one of the distribution channels?

A torrent accessible right from their home page...

Yup.

What is your point?

Torrents have been used to distribute legitimate software .. such as all the popular linux distros .. since they first appeared online.

There are plenty of examples that torrents are used to distribute files. This is much better than the past ways.

Ex of an awesome mod distributed primarily by torrent: http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19978

doesnt blizzard use a similar feature when downloading patches? i remember one instance where i was installing patches for World of Warcraft, and the downloader box for the patch was going to different "users" to get each patch.

it does but it's not "public," what i liked about STO was it was a public, normally treated, download method, it wasn't hidden or treated as special "just another mirror"

Torrents need more of that kind of exposure.

What, something like http://www.gameupdates.org/. It's completely moderated so no illegal content here. It's been up for several years and has grown a positive community.
