How long has it taken you guys to learn how to program with DirectX? I've been thinking about making a simple application that would need some 3D effects but I know nothing about DirectX programming.

Any book suggestions or links would be appreciated.

I took a day and learned DirectDraw. Still haven't tried Direct3D.

There are many parts of DirectX -- DirectDraw (discontinued), Direct3D, DirectInput, DirectPlay, etc.

It will take you a while to learn DirectX fully.

However, for just some very simple 3D effects, I'd say you could do it easily in a day with tutorial help.

Thanks. The thing that I want to do is something along the lines of having a book with pages that will turn to the next page. It's not necessary that the pages bend like paper, they can stay rigid.

Couldn't you just model and render it in Lightwave, Maya, or 3DSMax and then embed the video?

I want it to be interactive though. I've used 3D Studio so I know I'll probably end up designing it in there but to make it interative I'll most likely need to learn DirectX.

That will most likely take more than a day to make :?

That's pretty advanced.

This is kind of late but, I used a program called Zinio Reader and it has a page flipping style. I was reading Electronic Gaming Monthly with it. It may not be what you are looking for, but this thread came to mind when I used this program. Check it out if you are still having problems with that. Everything looks real and crystal clear with it.
