I wanted to install Apache, MySQL, PHP, etc. on my Windows XP machine for web programming testing and so forth. Are there any recommended packages out there to accomplish this? I checked Google but I'm looking for packages that experienced folks would recommend. This is my work computer so I don't want to @#$%! it up (yes, a pre-install Ghost will take place.)

Thanks for the help!!

Xampp is a really good premade packaging of all of the things you require.

+1 for Xampp. Although as a warning be sure to not use it in a production system as it is rather insecure in its default install.

I checked that out and it seemed like there was a whole lot more than I would need. Can one deselect options that won't be needed?

The other thing is that I would want to start the software(s) manually; I wouldn't want things running 24/7, so to speak.

At least on linux, you have the option to start the individual services. So if you only needed MySQL and PHP, you can start just those.
