My buddy's computer got fried and he lost the password for our forum (only admin) so we're F*ed. Can anybody shoot me a good tutorial for php and MySQL.. I need to learn how to "hack" the software to get his password back... thanks!

If not since I assume as you're an admin you have local access to the mysql database, correct? There's no need to hack anything.

All you need to do is run a simple SQL update command to change the password.

Now see this is where it would be handy to tell us what forum software you're using! I could have then easily looked up the user table structure of the forum in question and wrote out that update command for you. This forum is phpbb and so for example the update command would be:

UPDATE phpbb_users SET user_password = MD5('new password') WHERE username = 'username';

It's Php 2.0.0

And I don't have access to ANYTHING. I've been reading about MySQL and the PHP commands but my issue is that I don't know how to view the PHP software. If I could just get that far, I have already searched out codes and programs to reset the password. I have downladed php, mysql and a nice program called Xampp which is an all in one suite. Then just tell him to run the MySQL query. No big deal, really.

Right, but why do that when your buddy can just log into his MySQL admin page and run the query himself? It's not going to happen any other way, because it seems you, like many others, are not skilled enough to take it down by force.
