Most of us are self-taught. Some of us also went to school and pretended to be taught to get a piece of paper that 'proves' we know what we are talking about.
I've noticed an interesting trend in IT .. many companies ask applicants to write comprehensive exams as the first step in the hiring process. They do this because of the huge inconsistency in teaching, I think. I love it .. I've aced every exam so far.
