can someone tell me why:

Code:
   char *A4;
   A4 = (char *)malloc(3*sizeof(char *));
   A4[0] = "Jake";
   A4[1] = "loves";
   A4[2] = "computers";
   printf("%s %s %s\n",A4[0], A4[1], A4[2]);
   free(A4);


stores only the ASCII value of the first character instead of a string. Obviously I would like the output of "Jake loves computers"

I am trying to debug a much more annoying problem I am having by starting with basic arrays and didn't make it very far. And yes, I do need the dynamic memory allocation.

First thought is it is a char. An array of type char is a string. I haven't written C in a while, and it could be memory/pointer related, but my first thought lies with the char vs string type.

if you have A4 with a size/length of 4, and you do:

A4 = "Jake";

Then:

A4[0] = "J"
A4[1] = "a"
A4[2] = "k"
A4[3] = "e"

A char is only an 8 bit value, so it can only hold a single character.

A4[0] = "Jake"; is not valid because you are trying to assign a string to a char value. You either need to do something like this:
Code:
char A4[4]
A4[0] = 'J'
A4[1] = 'a'
A4[2] = 'k'
A4[3] = 'e'

or use the string datatype by including string.h.

I'm not sure if you can populate/print arrays of chars with datastreams in C like you can in C++.
