I was going over old MPC issues and came across the how-to for HTMLifying your desktop.

I was thinking how cool would it be if you could utilize java to create a dynamicHTML (dhtml ;) ) type setup where you could have your own custom start menus, use a form to load more links into the dynamiuc lists, etc.

Is there any way to actually run a file using HTML, without having to press save and run (or run and run) with SP2?

i've tried tweaking security settings in internet options, but to no avail...

can anybody help?

also, a link to a how to for java scripting that can open and edit test files for storing dynamic data would be useful
thanks

Maybe you could write it with a Flash object and embed it full-screen?

EDIT: Just tried it and it works.

OK, I really didn't need any distractions, but this might actually turn out to be somewhat useful since Windows XP has a seriously annoying habit of jacking up icons. Time to set them in stone... :)

If you right click on the select properties then the desktop tab then customize then web and click the new button (which you've already done before if you've added a web page to your desktop), there is a select from gallery option which includes a little applet from NASA for tracking satellites.

My desktop is pretty jacked right now, but I do have a pic of a hottie, the java api and that applet sitting on my desktop. So it looks like pictures, html, javascript, java work for sure. I'll try embed a mpeg later.

FYI - Despite the unfortunate naming similiarity, Java and JavaScript are two completely different things.

Well, since you suggested flash, could anyone suggest a good tutorial to start out with, and spefically, how to embed HTML into flash?

Google "Flash Tutorial"

Actually, MaximumPC had a Flash article a while back.

And you want to embed Flash in HTML, not the other way around. You can use the <embed> tag.
