Hello all,

I am very interested in creating a game centered around the star trek universe. I am wondering how i would go about creating this new universe. It is going to be a very very large map, containing over 200 hundred planets, thousands upon thousands of individual objects. I am looking for 2 things, A.) a 3D engine that will handle the strain of a game that demands so much, and B.) cheap, or free to use. I appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Hiremenow

Of course, if you do manage to create the game, the sequel will involve fighting off hordes of lawyers who're shredding your financial corpse for appropriating and misusing the Star Trek name and universe.

It depends (nerd hat) because I know you can create anything you want in the Star Wars Universe but you are not allowed to make money without permission. So creating it is fine, and I think you still own the "content" but you can't sell it.

Im not trying to profit off of it. I'm just building it so i have something to entertain me, im not going to be distributing it.

I am sure you could distribute it if you wanted, you just can't make money on it. Same thing for fan-fiction etc (I think).

Good luck... but consider that developing a game is a pretty difficult task. I think that it is GameDev.net or something that has some really good guides on getting started.

We used SDL.NET and "built" our own engine. http://gpwiki.org/index.php/SDL_net. Look into XNA.

I STRONGLY suggest you avoid anything 3D. 3D is hard. Game development and programming is hard enough as it is.
