Is there a way that I can run several versions of the same browser on a machine for development purposes (I do web design and like to check compatability with various browsers, and browser versions, but don't want to have to have a room full of computers to do it. I figure, a computer running XP, one with 7, and a Mac should be fine enough, and maybe a Linux computer).

Any way that I can do this. LIke I want to test a site with FF1.x, 2.x and 3.x, and then IE6, IE7, and IE8 as well as Safari version 3 and later. What's the best way to go about this?? I'm aware of the idea of dual-booting but that will only accomplish so much for me.... I need a better way.

I don't mind runnning the newer s tuff (Safari 5, FF3 and IE8 on all the same Windows 7 machine) and then maybe IE6, FF2 and Safari 3 or 4 on a WinXP machine, etc etc...

I'm not so worried about HTML support as I am CSS support across browsers and browser-versions. I'm trying to develop sites that are compatible with older browsers (because I realize my target market may not have the latest technology and some may still be using IE6 and/or FF2.x or something even older.)

Virtualization is your friend! Check out VirtualBox and VMWare.

Look up IE Collection.
You could run various portable versions of Firefox.

VMs seems overkill for only browsers.

well, i do programming as well, so I figured at least with that, I could test my software in various environments as well. If it was ONLY for browsing purposes, I'd say forget the VMs, but I do like the idea of being able to run older apps / testing apps in older/different OSes. I only really need to go back to IE6 and probably FF2.x. Those are my two main concerns, since they make up a good percentage of browsers being used. I'd also like to test on Chrome and Safari (for those die-hard Mac users who don't use FF on the Mac).

Good point. If you're app doesn't work in one of the best, and most standards compliant browser available, then I shouldn't be using your app. You're saving me time! =)

^^ Yours is a not widely shared opinion. I mean, even Apple's browser has more users! :)

While I was mostly joking that nobody cares about it the truth is hardly anybody does. If you are developing a web app I would test with IE and FF and Chrome. If it works in those, it will likely work in Safari and Opera.
