Hey all..

Just a quickie.. what maximum NTFS file size is considered safe ? I've read somewhere that any file (avi, mpg, iso, etc) must not exceed 8GB; some says NTFS's safe file size is 2GB.

And this is my experience.. my 2TB drive just took a dump after setting my PVR to record marathons of tv shows. Some are as high as 18 GB (for a 9-hour marathon) which probably killed my drive. I've set the recording quality to "fair" which is the lowest.

FYI: I'm using win7 + usb Hauppage 950Q on mini-itx (asrock E350M1).

Thanks for your kind helps in advance :)

I know it's greater than 18 GB.

I have some rips that are 40+ GB in size, and they play just fine.

I'll see if I can find the definitive answer.

It's well over that amount. If it 3was 2 gigs, then no one would be able to burn linux ISOs

Fat32 had a limit of like 4 Gigs IIRC though. I'd say you have something else going on. Can you see the files?

hi guys :) TY for the replies.

yea i can see the avi files (some as big as 15 GB) - when i play it on VLC it would just freeze. And when I try to copy the file to external drive (esata, usb2) it would say source disk error. And it was NTFS format.

Yea I've already took out that western digital 2TB (wil have to RMA it). But when i tried to 'nuke' or 'write zeros' to the drive, it fails, so i can't erase the drive even with bootable iso cd for drive erasing.

I already replaced it with a toshiba 500GB, installed w7 and the hauppage usb 950q pvr and back to business for recording tv shows :) but now i must make sure my tv scheduler don't record marathons ! i would have to add mulitple entries which is ok. Sadly the hauppage recorder's lowest recording option still is about 1.2GB / hour.

My super old ATI 8500DV ( AGP ) can do 670MB/hour.

Maybe its time to install mythbuntu !

Are you sure it's not the storage controller or the motherboard?

negative.. cuz it failed on both mini-itx (asrock 350M) and asus-p8p67m-pro-rev3 with i5-2500k.
