Hi all,

not sure if this is the right group, but I'll ask anyway. I'm trying to get my mother a Cassette to PC recorder for Christmas. I know many people would say, "just buy her a tape player, a dual male audio cable, and that's it." Well, she's done it before and she didn't like the way the end result came out. She's not the most tech literate and she's adamant about not trying that method. Does equipment exist where she can transfer cassettes via USB, that have the software to do it? She wants to transfer old recordings of my great great grandfather before he had died so they can be passed on to descendants. Any help is much appreciated.

She probably just wasn't using the right settings for the recording. Also, your quality will be limited by the cassette.
Show her how to make and play FLACs from the cassettes. This will get much better quality. The USB ones are kinda low quality.

alright then. So I have to convince her to use the method she hates then? What's a good SIMPLE program then?

Audacity works, and could be preconfigured. Or, you could do the transfer yourself as a gift.

If she's wanting a one piece device then something like a Pyle PL5CSUB or a Grace Digital Tape player is the way to go.

In the end, she may still have a crappy recording. Obviously, the original content probably wasn't recorded with any type of studio quality equipment.

I've recorded tapes by connecting the cassette deck's audio outputs to the microphone/input on my motherboard. Press play and record a WAV file with Audacity for free. Edit it as needed with Audacity, then convert it to MP3 or FLAC with LAME or the FLAC Frontend.

They'll sound as good as the tape. Tapes got us all by for many years. No one died.

Thank you for the recap
This is really the simplest way of doing it, and I have done this several times.

if they are "old" tapes they might very well be recorded in mono. if so, try inputing the output to both channels of the stereo recording device, use a mono splitter and run to each channel of the recording input, she could have been unhappy with previous recordings because the recording was only on one side of the stereo, and the other side was blank or just recording open channel noise.
