My new cell phone has an HDMI output and it works nicely but my computer monitor doesn't have speakers so I only get video.

Is there a way to split the HDMI cable into separate video and audio signals so that I can plug the video into the monitor and the audio into my computer?

Why a cell phone needs HDMI is beyond me...but I digress.

First off HDMI is a digital signal and most likely your input to your speakers is analog. So, what you would need is a converter, something like the GefenTV HDMI to Composite Scaler. That will run you about $300 plus any associated splitters you would need.

UPDATE: You can check out some of these HDMI D/A converters: http://www.nextag.com/hdmi-to-analog-audio-converter/products-html

However, for your setup, you will probably have to get an HDMI splitter so one signal can go to your monitor and the other to the D/A converter. Or...

How important is it to you? because now we're talkin' $$

The reason why this cell phone has an HDMI out is due to it being able to record 720p video.

It's really nice not having to transfer that video to a computer first and/or burn it to DVD before watching the video on a large screen.

Thanks for the info. If it's going to cost that much then I'll probably just wait until I need to upgrade my monitor and look for one that has HDMI audio.
