I'm not to up to date on VirtualDub anymore. But when I needed to transcode a MPEG-2 file I used VirtualDubMod since it was made to handle those files. The original can only handle .avis and such.

It won't load the files. I also use avidemux and that stops before I get a full copy. I transcode it to avi but when editing it the sound isn't in sync. If there is easy way to remove commercials I would do that.

This may seem like a novice approach (which I am) but may be an option.

I use Sony’s Movie Studio to create videos, but have noticed it doesn’t like .avi files.

I also use Widows Movie Maker to shrink massive video files down to something more manageable, similar to what you want to do. However, WMM doesn’t like .mp4 files but loves .avi files.

During my obsessive-compulsive, self-inflicted learning, I stumbled across Format Factory. A free utility that converts ANY video/photo/audio file to just about any other.

If your video editor requires a certain ‘format’, Format Factory can covert it to that standard. Once you have edited out the commercials, you can use it to convert your finished video to .avi, filter it through WMM, and shrink it down to <100Mb… a size uploadable to YouTube.

Just last night I had an 8.77Gb .avi file that I filtered through WMM and shrank it down to 40Mb with minimal loss of video quality. Audio and video remained in sync.

I hope this helps. If not, then I guess I just flashed my n00bs! :|

How exactly did you create the tv recording? If its something like with Windows Media Center there are a few automated tools. I used to use the Lifextender app when I was using Vista to remove commercials. There should be a similar tool for other formats as well.

I use AutoGK, which comes with VirtualDubMod attached, and works awesomely. If you end up needing to re-sync the audio, it's not too incredibly difficult, usually just a few hit-n-miss guesses on the timing (cuz not all videos de-sync the same). You can choose the size and whether to use the DivX or Xvid codecs. It's a good idea to download the latest codecs too. AutoGK likes to play nice with most all video formats too, but will only export to .avi's. Have fun with it if you do try it. I know I like it a lot.
