I was like WTF? how did the post office get it across the country so quickly. I didn't use overnight shipping, I used the flat rate priority mail for $4.85.

Not really...

If they (any carrier) don't have enough Overnight or Priority to fill the plane, they'll add 2nd day or regular stuff to 'fill tonnage.'

The railroads did this back in the 1860's, so it's not new...
