Just don't turn into one of those pricks like the guy described in the first post. Try to bend the rules a bit here and there.

What kind of qualifications do they look for in a person applying?

there weren't any questions about your level of expertise in the application...my guess would be that they'll either ask me when I get a call from a manager for an interview or that they don't care, or that by applying for the position they assume I know what I'm doing

and I Won't be a prick...when I worked at gamestop I never oversold something or recommended a crappy game (I liked metal gear solid 2)

I don't see myself doing that at any point in my life

I hope...

then again, I do want to go to law school...

I might be screwed

My one beef with Gamestop was when I picked up my DVD copy of UT2004 and the asswipes that worked there were apparently told to open up the boxes and mark up the rebate offers with pen, then put them back in the boxes.

That was fucked up, not that I actually wasted my loot on UT2003, but it was still a fucked up thing do to.

Other then that I had no problems with Gamestop.

my gamestop (it was still funcoland when I worked there) was pretty decent...but the one in the mall was full of people like the guy you described...they even refused to let me return a faulty xbox I bought there because I was an employee...that was before the district manager just happened to get evidence that the manager was making employees work off the clock....

not that I had anything to do with that...

Yes, I agree this is not just a WorstBuy problem. I have a freind who told me of a so called computer repair guy that was working on his sisters computer, and every time he came over to fix something all he would do is sit in front of their computer for about 4 or 5 hours eating cheeseburgers and then say he fixed it and chrge them 200 dollars or so and when his sister tried her computer she had the same problems. The second is for a a guy I know who used to work for a company in the Milwaukee, wi area and is a rather lardge local outfit extending into ohter local areas.. The person in question used to do house calls for his company, and I'm sure that many of the forum members are familiar with this tactic. What this person was doing was telling people that their harddrive or proc was broken when it really wasn't and then keeping the hardware either for himself or resselling the hardware to his friends or selling it to other customers at great profit and eventually it was found out that the whole staff at the store was involved in this tactic and eventually fired. This kind of thing seems to be more widespread than many people think.

best buy really isn't a bad place... well maybe i am just speaking about NYC ones.

Best Buy has never ripped me off, tricked me, or commited fraud against me. Infact, i bought an Emachine from them last year for 400 dollars [printer and monitor included!], granted it wasn't a machine i would use or be proud of- but for my mom, 256RAM 2.8GHz Celeron is perfect for her-- with a 17' flat screen CRT!

as far as crooked employees tricking old ladies- sounds like an urban legend or wives tale. sure there are crooked employees looking to make a commission, but the majority of employees don't want to risk their jobs or experience/recommendations if they are caught.

for this, you can flame me: I just applied to be a geek

seriously

I'm making 7 an hour working at a newspaper doing something I like (with no dress code) but after just rebuilding my system and buying books for the semester and car payments 10 to 15 being a corporate lackey doesn't sound so bad...

though I really do think that everyone should go look at the lingo they use on their site

Well maybe you can refine the spindle testing.

Spindle Test? Sounds like somplete, gooey, smelly, stinky bull shit to me. I am from MN as well, and I remember when the Geek Squad was a reputable service. Now Best Buy just has them bent over a barrel. I have one or two aquaintences that work for the Geek Squad at a best buy store, and apparently, you don't need one qualification to work for them. Not ONE! NOT EVEN A+!

You are absolutely right on this, one of the serious problems with the best buy system of hiring for geek swaud, is rather then having the actualy senior/manager of the department hire them, the sales managers are responsible for it. I started working at Geek Squad about four months ago.

I totally do understand the orginal posters comments, sadly its true there are many problems with the geek squad located in best buy.

There is no standard for equipement/diagnosis software. What we have is what we make/use ourselves, I am currently in the process of making a CD for some of the jobs we do in the back.

The fact any idiot can be hired there is very troublesome I come from a background of A+ "Like it means anything anymore" about 1 1/2 years of computer repair at a Voc school *ran out of money* and about 6 years experience in the "field". I have been there for 4 months, there is about 12 people that work with me, I would rate my knowledge in the top 5. What is bad about that is, I know my knowledge is limited anyone with below my knowledge should not be working back there.

Our pay ranges from $10-$20.

You really shouldn't base that experience on a basis of opinion on the company *not really try to defend them* because it varies so greatly from store to store its ridiculous. I have been to store 30 minutes away from mine and wished I had the tools/setup they did, and then when I visited Omaha I stopped by the store just to see how it was, and I couldn't carry a conversation with the 2 techs there, they were just DUMB *And this was in a HUGE city*.

Geek squad was a great company till Best Buy got a hold of them. There problem is they want to keep us "seperate" but don't, if they let us control our budget and allow us a nice area we could do business greatly. Great example: there is about 6 areas in best buy, each with its own manager, we have switched between 3 different departments in a year because they don't know who we should be controlled by.

So this wasn't really a rant or a defensive post, kinda more of an informative one *from me*.

HI btw I am eddie, nice forum, love the magazine.

Know what I hate is when people want you to work on your computer for free.

Them: I really don'y want to pay the money to get it fixed so i brought it to you.

Time wrap

Me: ummm, ok then, looks like you visted over 10000000 porno pages and the spyware boged down your computer, I did......

Them: cool i don't care thanks bye

Me: you might want..... (tires squealing in the background).... nevermind you'll be back.

Damn those friends of the family

I love when the customers come up with their computers and says there is viruses/spyware on their computer and say they have NO IDEA how it got there, while there 14-18 year old is standing there with them. Geeee I don't have any idea either...
