Over all, I like the browser. I'm still using FF 3.0.10, but IE8 is a step in the right direction for Micro$haft.

Having been nice, now I've got a bitch out for you. Why in the HELL does upgrading your fucking browser to IE8 mean my home page and default search bar in FF get's changed to MSN and MS Live? That's friggin BULLSHIT Micro$haft!

No wonder people like me who have been big time Windows users are feeling more and more pushed towards Ubuntu and the like. Yes, I said PUSHED. I'm tired of your damned pointless intrusiveness.

Edit: And to make matters worse, IE8 can't seem to properly log into secure websites that have more than one security certificate. It chokes on it. FF hasn't got this problem and FF also handles and accepts certificates with much greater aplomb than IE8.

I'm trying to find it in the Win7 agreement, but can't. But I was sure I'd seen something about how IE8 treats other browsers (but not in black and white). I see what you see, and just stopped mucking with it until I can un-bind myself from the contract.

Let's hope IE8 doesn't remain to be intrusive. They're asking for legal issues if this is what it does in retail.

I can't really say that I have experience this problem. I have IE 8 installed on my Vista 64 bit machine an on an XP machine. I'm a power user so I have to customize everything. I use FF as my main explore and IE 8 is just there to keep the wolves at bay but it never changed anything in FF. Also the XP machine being a family computer is used on a regular basis having been used for secure sites and such.

I'm not a M$ fan but I'm just thinking that your unlucky.

Um...I clock in about one clean (Windows) install every month, to include both Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox (whatever the build of the moment) and I have *never* had the problem you've described.

In point of fact, IE8 has gone out of the way (when it's been installed after other browsers, i.e., Firefox) to ask if I want to import home pages/favorites from my other installed internet browsers!

Now, I hardly use it, but, as AirheadQ stated, I keep it handy in case of emergencies. Methinks your problem lies elsewhere, my friend.

When you mean you clock in one clean windows install every month does that mean your doing it for a job or are you saying your reformatting your computer every month?

reformatting once a month is a complete waste of time...

@comptech08 - sorry for not being clear. Yes, I did mean to say that I wipe my main computer clean and do a fresh install (of Windows/Linux/sometimes MacOS) about once a month.

I also fix/upgrade/repair/shoot people's computers on the side, so...I guess I clock in quite a few more than one per month, upon reflection - lol!

I mean I could reply that I upgrade all the time and am the designated risk-taker in and amoung my group of computer-friends and, as such, like to be extreeeeeemely up-to-date on everything, but, well...closer to the truth would more likely be: I simply have that little of a life (and am that pathetically bored!) to have the time and enterprise to do clean installs that often! (Ahh, the joys of sex...or the lack thereof...)

In any case, this thread has been (inadvertently) hijacked by me...and I won't have it!

So...the only reason I can think of that Quakindude has had his "IE8 controls all" problem is that maybe, upon install/initial spin-up of IE8, he might've unintentionally clicked the "Yes, I want IE8 to be my default browser" button or something.

Beyond that...I am stumped!

lol even if you did update all the time, that would be a waste of money. You must have a good job or have very gracious parents. Also having to reinstall every time means you would be upgrading your HDD. if you were doing that every month, WHY lol.

@comptech08 - why would doing a clean install be a waste of money? A waste of time, perhaps (as you've all pointed out), but...of money? And, though my parents are very free with what little money they have, I am a 41-year-old ex-military guy who has a little money to spare and a great love for things computer-related and likes to (when I can afford it) have the latest and greatest.

Part of the reason why I do clean installs so often is because I've always been (and the military only made it worse!) obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness/organization, and a clean/well-organized, sparkly OS is next to godliness, yah?

As for Pr0n, well I could deny until I die, but what would that matter? In other words, why would that necessitate clean installs? Likewise "hax" or warez...if I knew anything about anything, why would the possession of warez on my rig make clean installs necessary? And what do you mean by "hax", exactly?

An aside - why, if I had anything besides some no-name, piece-of-shit hard drive, would I have to upgrade *it* every time I do a clean install? O_o?

As for a CD key - well, mate, I'm currently running the latest build of Windows 7, complete with my valid CD key from Microsoft, so I'm good until June of next year, n'cest pas?

Anyway.

IMHO, I reinstall pretty frequently simply because I know I'm using an unaltered clean OS. (Is it just me or do you get a warm and fuzzy feeling from reinstalling and tweaking that OS to perfection?) I can't use virtual machines simply since there is no hardware acceleration (play crysis on a vtm, I dare you). I install a bunch a crap; game demos, trial software, old games and I know that in the end there will be a shit stain left that not even revo uninstaller can clean up.

Just reset the things back to normal. In the end, your gonna use Firefox.

It happened on two of five computers in my house. I have no idea why it happened to those two and not all five. The only differences other than the plugins used for FF on each computer would be both computers also had Vista on them. The three XP computers didn't do this.

IDK. But I've set them properly for FF use and as Airhead mentioned, it's no biggie now. But it sure does irritate me when a piece of software exerts it's control over competing software like that.

Maybe you had an itchy trigger finger when installing IE8. Well no matter, happy to know that Windows is at peace once again.
