I don't know if im alone in this but vista should be killed as a operating system altogether and Microsoft should admit to it failures with this piece of garbage .
I thought like the rest that vista was the future but after 4 months and a ruined hard drive and alot of lost files which i should have back up but didn't lead me to rethink alot of things and now i use Linux
With vista it started with slow booting and then error messages and the final thing the blue screen of death. tried to reinstall but it wouldn't tried the whole bit with Microsoft with tech support nothing then with one last ditch effort i tried to reinstall xp again nothing after i tried a reboot the hard drive died so please tell me do you think it worth it dealing with vista what ever they do to it to fix it in the end it's still a piece of garbage at least with xp you had something decent to work with but now i just don't know ?
Linux saved my machine from the trash can in this day where money is hard to come by and trying to pay the bills buying a window product and being able to go online and get a Linux operating system for free should make you rethink your decision to give Microsoft your money and make them richer and to that ends my rant about my Microsoft nightmare.

Failing hard drive seems to be what you described there. That happens, and is a far more likely explanation.
That, or your failure to use the period <.> key borked your Windows install, in addition to our frontal lobes.

Been running Vista for the last two years on my laptop (and, it too shipped with XP, labelled as 'Vista-ready') - it's still running.

NOT Dog-worthy, IMHO.

<edit>
The lappy in question is not 'Vista ready' - it's 'Vista-capable' (a lower rating, meaning it may not run Aero.)
Still, running fine, though. Aero slows it down a ton (crappy 6150 graphics chip), so I don't run Aero.
Still, though, it hasn't eaten a hard drive. :)

before anyone can post an I hate vista or vista broke my computer thread they should have to post.

1. a detailed hardware list of components included approximate age, and what driver version they're using.

2. all the third party tweaking applications they downloaded

3. a screen shot showing the computer is malware free

just saying vista made my hard drive fail doesn't cut it.

Is it even possible for software to "kill" a hard drive?

The original post is so full of ignorance I'm not even going to address it all.

It's just a rant with no subject knowledge that I can see. If it had been Linux on there and the HD died, would we have seen a 'Linux killed my HD' post?

The answer to your question is yes. And no, just installing Vista to a HD won't make it "die". It was probably already on the way out, as they had Vista installed for 4 months before it died. Vista didn't cause it, old hardware did.

Mhm. I will admit Vista has its days, but for the most part its alright. Remember those Mojave commercials? They taught people how to actually use their computer and it actually wasn't bad? Vista does not kill HDDs, age does. To me it seems the biggest reason that everyone hates Vista is that we all got used to XP, and Microsoft moved everything around on us. Annoying, yes; debacle; no.

Please try not to resurrect threads more than 30 days old.
