Maximum PC

My motherboard is close to two years old. Its an Abit 680i IN9-32X Max. I wanted a little more hard drive performance so I upgraded my 74gb raptors to WD3000glfs velociraptors to run in raid 0. What I experienced was data corruption from Windows XP to Vista 32 and 64. I have the latest bios updated and drivers. The diagnosis was hard ware conflict and incompatibility with 680i nforce hardware. WD tech support said that there are issues with 680i. So now I got to send them back to Newegg and eat a restocking fee. I know my motherboard isn't exactly the latest hardware but I expected more life out of it than this. Considering the history of nVidia 680i problems like data corruption isn't there a class action I can jump on here?

Was your controller billed as board capable of running 32gb or greater? If so then yes, if not then no....

Problem # 1: You bought an Abit motherboard. They've pretty well always had problems, especially with RAID.

There's knowing what you have and it's capabilities, then there's knowing what you have an it's capabilities.

It's like "Yeah Officer, I know her" and "Yeah Officer, I know her..."

I had fixed that problem with turning on TLER on the drives with a WDTLER utility. Now they work fine.

So now can WD bring a counter-suit against you for the frivolous suit you initially sought?

Are you for real? You probably do not know that WD tech support engineers were unable to solve this problem. You probably don't know that WD senior technitions I spoke to at their head quarters in California admitted that they have a long standing compatibility problem with 680i hardware. You probably didn't know that they asked me when I figure this out please let them know how I did it so they can help the next guy. You probably do not know there was no warning on the product in question. You also didn't know it took two weeks of staying up late searching the internet for answers. And when I found a solution the senior tech guys said that the reason they didn't recommend that was because that was an tool used by the engineers and that they weren't privy to that information....

So you can take that statement back and do something to it...

I don't blame the hard drive manufacturer too much. The facts are their tech support department needs work. Its not their fault that their drives have problems with nForce. I blame nVidia more, though I'm not going to lose sleep over it. WD tech support should of been aware the solution. But thats my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I suppose that old saying 'buyer beware' applies so I'll take some of the blame. But I'm pretty happy on how it all worked out and I'm going to continue to post about it so that others with the same problem can find a fix and not let kill joys like yourselves make me feel like an idiot....

Look guys, the entire nVidia chipset line has been eating drives left and right. They know this, they make BIOS patches on top of BIOS patches, and it's still happening.

When nVidia chipped boards state they have a Hard Drive controller, they're lying. They have what's called a "Hard Drive killer", they just need to openly state that. It's truth in advertising.

Abit can't fix what isn't theirs. nVidia uses a one-chip design, so everyone that goes with nVidia must do the same, or do as they normally do and add a Promise HDD controller. Either way, the data still goes through the chipset and get's corrupted. It's all that use the chipset, not the manufacturer's fault. They can't cure the problem.

They really should have a class action lawsuit filed against them. It's not hit and miss, but has ran rampant since they decided to get into the business of making chipsets. If not to replace all the hard drives we've lost due to known issues, then to have them openly state these issues. Right now, they hide it in the BIOS readmes and white papers. Get that warning up front, and in bold, before someone decides to take the plunge into their product.

The RMA's I could still use and get back are still working quite well on Intel southbridges.

It took all of that to firmly state "I'm not going with nVidia ever again", and openly advise others to do the same in these forums. They'd be good, if they didn't kill parts.

I agree with that last statement. Take my Macbook pro which is now having weird screen video controller issues. Apple wants me to give it up for a couple weeks to have its video hardware replaced thanks to nVidia's chipset not being properly made. Though I think there will be and probably are suits against them though on the vendor corporate side of things.

Honestly, I still haven't seen so much as even a hint regarding that last post Chumly made. I've been using Nvidia chipsets since they started making them, and lo-and-behold, I've never had an issue with any, ever. We're talking hundreds of system builds, upgrades, etc. In fact, I have an Nvidia chipset in my main current rig now, and have used it for 3+ years, without a hiccup. The only chipsets I've had any real issues with were the VIA chips on the Soyo Dragon lines. I don't know what their issues are, but they're very unstable, to this day. Obviously, they used a different HDD controller, but those still suck. Like I said, though, I've never once had an issue, nor have I personally known or talked to anyone who has, with Nvidia chipsets.

JC...then you're against the grain. Just because you or I get working products doesn't mean we ignore it like all is peachy.

I've seen it, yet hold my breath. It's been rampant, and I'd love to step foot in their QA or Validation department and give my VERY valid opinion on what's going on in there.I had a hand in both parties, mind you.

What I list isn't fake, it's real. You have zero issues, I have 100%. So let's talk about all buyers based on us. 50% is a horrible failure rate, and is deemed for action.

The more folks talk, the more there's no "zero's" on nVidia's part. They just can't make a good chipset. They make them for the blind pretty much. As long as they overclock to the hills, they're happy...for a week. Then what happens? They're here, out of the limelight, and stating something is really wrong with these things.

Why do people use nVidia...that's my real beef. Why? Just to pay money for a startup company and back them? Given the issues,fact or fiction, there's no reason to ever buy nVidia chips.

People spend money on known brands. nVidai is a fan based brands with open issues. I don't get it, unless to be loyal to a brand.

Go to Intel, you won't have an issue. Problem solved. If you won't, that's the question at hand.
