I wonder if it had anything to do with me refusing to buy anything from Newegg between June 1st and now?

Quote:

Dear Valued Newegg Customer,

As a result of recent changes in New York State tax law requiring certain out-of-state retailers to collect and remit sales taxes to the State of New York, we began collecting applicable sales tax for all orders shipped to New York addresses starting June 1, 2008.

After careful review and consideration, we are pleased to inform you that we have stopped collecting New York sales tax, effective August 21, 2008. This decision was driven by your direct and candid feedback and our continued commitment to you as our valued customers.

We appreciate your patience as we worked through this process, and would like to reiterate our commitment in offering our customers the broadest product selection, competitive pricing, fastest shipping, and award-winning customer service.

We look forward to continuing to provide you with the premier online shopping experience for all of your IT and consumer electronics needs.

Sincerely,

Bernard Luthi
Newegg.com
Company Spokesperson and
Vice President of Merchandising

So NY changed it's mind, or Newegg's going to avoid paying taxes?

You guys should thank God you don't live in California. Almost all computer businesses are located here, so we always have to pay SHIpping and Tax (notice the highly appropriate acronym it makes).

My God has nothing to do with taxes, and you'll pay shipping none the less.

Jersey has a Newegg hub which most of my parts come from. I think they should only charge taxes on items FROM your state. If it comes from Jersey, why in the hell am I charged a tax? It's illegal, so why is the law written like that? There needs a ratification to where you don't get taxed just because the person you're buying from just happens to have some office in some state. The part's in Jersey, it's shipped from Jersey, Jersey folk handle it, don't tax me in Cali!

If it came from the City of Industry, the tax me...I'm fine with that. But it's BS if it's made in China/Taiwan, shipped into New York, and stocked in New Jersey. Just having an office or warehouse that doesn't have anything to do with the part I just ordered doesn't call for taxes. 180 years ago, we'd dump the parts in the bay!

And I know we have a new lawyer section in the mag...She paying attention? I'll be counting the days the forums matter, and I'm not crossing my fingers.

Now? That started almost 6 years ago, and it's not a bad thing. Know a good place for a landfill? We're all looking for that...
