Maybe it's been posted before, but this is by far and wide the best and most intelligent anti-MS rant I've ever read. Long, but good. Sure makes you appreciate Linux.

I still believe that w/o Wintel driving the PC market, we maybe just now would be getting to 1GHZ processors...

So I don't hate MS...I am grateful for their existence.

not at all. I dont get crashes on either of my machines. one is windows 2k one is windows xp pro. Yes, i agree with the sentiment that windows me, was crappy, but not their 2k xp line. IMO, it's easy to configure, and use. Performance wise, the only thing i can check is time to compile small apps i do, and games. In games, It is faster than linux, for development, i like vc 6.0.

what problems do you have with xp or 2k? If you got a problem, I'd like to know how that pertains to my usage.

The right tool for the right job - this just happens to do the job i want.

Dude(just a guess) 2K/XP is still crash happy...MS just made it so you dont see it.you ever have a program that dies...and ya get a sweet little message from windoze that sez it is going to shut it down,or havent you got a "windows will shutdown in xx seconds"?How about "program has stoped responding" and it gives the option to kill the app or cancel?

That is the kinda stuff the replaced the BSOD and illegal ops messages.

BTW I agree that 2K is the most stable OS Microsloth has put out so far(has the edge on XP) but *nix still makes it it's bitch...

If linux ever gets to the point where I can buy the latest games and run them on it then goodby windows but until then it's microsoft. They also need a better way to install downloads.

The stability of Windows NT, 2000, and XP is all in the user/administrator.

I have seen Windows machines that can got months without a reboot, nor updates (behind a good firewall). And at the same time I have seen XP machines that can't even be turned on for more than a couple of minutes.

I have personally setup Windows solutions that achieve are always available.

Hardware is another issue, too many windows systems are put on cheap hardware, with bad drivers. These same conditions will take Linux down just as quickly, only difference being the indication seen by the user.

Once again a computer is a tool, you use what hardware and operating system necessary to get the job done.

I see few bothered to even read some of the article.

The main focus is not on how good or bad Windows itself is - though there is ample information on the topic - but rather the not-quite-legal business practices of the company and its founders, and how it is blatantly clear they want nothing more than to dominate the computing world and stomp out competition as much as possible. Of course we've all known this for years, but the levels they stoop to at times gave me a jolt.

One thing is clear from it: Gates got rich off his marketing and business practices, not his abilities to code.

He said (and I agree) - make it to market first. Branding is worth more than being better... ...which it is. Linksys is a prime example.

you cant blame MS for the way they market. anyone who has ever started a business has never started it to fail right? MS was lucky enough to the right people the right way and made it to the top and now they are trying to stay their. Just think of all the opportunities MS give developers to make add on to their products. Think is MS made it own Anti-Virus..just think if they made the best defrag program, but noooooo they dont. They give a basis and let other companies do the rest.
