OK...I feel dumb enough,,but wanted to check out vista.
went gateway...(please no spitting) and tried to upgrade from 2 gb to 4
I bought compatible(according to gateway) support) Dimms (kingston).
all should be swell...but I get a big BLUE screen from no apparent reason and a system shutdown. Take out the 2 new dimms..everybody is happy
Vista blames gateway, gateway blames vista,,then tried to sell me "there" upgrade.
Beating me up and p********* ing me off. Oh yea btw...if I install the dimms after the system has been running a while everbuddies cool....
but then after an evening of being off....I dare ya...start up and down she goes

You can safely omit Vista from the equation. Any OS is going to have trouble when the motherboard and system memory aren't speaking the same language (or at least at compatible timings/frequencies). Sounds like Gateway gave you poor info. Possibly in hopes that you'd buy their rebranded house RAM, instead.

The only time I've had trouble with RAM was when I bought it without first confirming compatibility with the motherboard manufacturer. 90% of my RAM is now Crucial brand, and I've never had compatibility issues with a single stick of it.

(Running 5 Vista-based PCs, btw).

Exact matching pairs is always the safest bet. There's stickers on the memory, and using those numbers should insure compatibility.
