I bought the 40GB version for my daughter's b-day in December. Wouldn't you know, two weeks after the 90-day warranty expired my daughter complains that the LCD display doesn't work anymore. Actually it does for about one minute after turn-on, then fades to unreadable.

So I took it to work where I have tools for performing microsurgery on MP3 players. I took it all apart and inspected the circuitboard and LCD under a 60x microscope. Nothing found, so I put it back together. At least it still works, but still has a bad display.

So I sent an email to Creative saying I need a RMA number, and described the problem, included part number and serial number, and requested price for repair.

Yesterday I got an email from Tech support saying they agree it's defective. It will cost $40 for repair or replacement. And before they can give me a RMA number, they need my name and address (ok, fair enough)... and they need the Zen Xtra model number and serial number (hello! scroll down the page... it's in the freaking email you sent me).

I guess $40 isn't bad if I can ever get a RMA number.

Sorry to hear it stopped working. I'd rather have the Dell DJ, myself.

Creatives warranty policy blows chunks. I have the same player with a dead HD.

Well I sent my daughter's Zen Xtra 40GB in for repair. Although it was past the stated 90-day warranty, they have a one year parts and labor warranty if you have a receipt to prove you bought it within the last year (which I sent). Anyways it was past the 90 day warranty but within the one year, so it ended up costing me $40. They couldn't repair it, so they replaced it with a new one.

I can't decide if I am happy or sad???. Shouldn't a product that costs $219 have better than a friggin' 90 day warranty? Anyway I am glad it only cost me $40.

Note to Willah: If you can't provide a receipt showing you bought it within one year... it's $91 to repair or replace it.

This is so true now looking at my brother's Zen Micro. It too has a 90-day warranty.

So unless they release a truly kick-ass player, I'll avoid them for good.

For $91 also I'll just buy a newer, faster and bigger HDD for it.
