In April 2008, I took advantage of a Verizon DSL deal that said I'd get 768down/128up service at $19.99 a month for life.
In October 2008, I got a card in my snailmail box saying that I was being given a free upgrade to 3.0Mdown/768up.

We are writing to let you know that your current Verizon High Speed Internet pricing plan expires soon. Your base monthly rate is scheduled to increase to $21.99 (not including additional services, equipment fees, taxes or surcharges) and will be reflected on your bill within the next two months. The new rate will remain in effect for one year.My response was, of course, "WTF?"
Long story short, it seems that when they gave me the free upgrade to 3.0Mb down, the "for life" part no longer applied! I was given two options: 1Mb/?down at $19.99 a month, or keep my 3.0Mb/768 at $21.99.
I know it's just two bucks, but the sleight of hand galls me.
And I already know that cable is faster, but even for 3.0Mb service, it's $29.99 a month if you have cable TV, $54 a month if you don't. We don't.
