It's official: Netflix is increasing disc plan
rates and now officially offering a streaming only plan.
Their reason, according to costumer service? They are becoming a streaming only service.
I loved Netflix once upon a time. I would receive my three discs at a time, often receiving them the mail delivery day after shipping. Then they increased my monthly rate because I also receive Blu-Ray titles. I didn't mind, after all Blu-Ray discs do cost more. Then they started throttling high usage customers with 'long wait' and 'very long wait' on popular titles. Okay, so my wife and I rent a fair number of discs a month.
I was able to deal with all that, because it never truly affected my ability to rent a disc.
My wife does use their streaming service a fair bit, but the only way to reach DVD quality is with their 'HD' stream. Also factor in that the streaming catalog is very limited and companies like HBO and Showtime are as of now unwilling to license their properties for streaming.
I would consider their streaming only service if they had 50% of their disc based selection, but it is nowhere near that.
I've enjoyed renting from Netflix since 2002, it is a shame I will be dropping them before the rate hike goes into effect.
