It's official: Netflix is increasing disc plan rates and now officially offering a streaming only plan.

Their reason, according to costumer service? They are becoming a streaming only service.

I loved Netflix once upon a time. I would receive my three discs at a time, often receiving them the mail delivery day after shipping. Then they increased my monthly rate because I also receive Blu-Ray titles. I didn't mind, after all Blu-Ray discs do cost more. Then they started throttling high usage customers with 'long wait' and 'very long wait' on popular titles. Okay, so my wife and I rent a fair number of discs a month.

I was able to deal with all that, because it never truly affected my ability to rent a disc.

My wife does use their streaming service a fair bit, but the only way to reach DVD quality is with their 'HD' stream. Also factor in that the streaming catalog is very limited and companies like HBO and Showtime are as of now unwilling to license their properties for streaming.

I would consider their streaming only service if they had 50% of their disc based selection, but it is nowhere near that.

I've enjoyed renting from Netflix since 2002, it is a shame I will be dropping them before the rate hike goes into effect.

It sounds like the people that are already subscribed are grandfathered in.

This is from my account:
"You are currently on the 1 DVD out at-a-time (Unlimited) for $8.99 plan which is no longer offered. If you select a new plan, you will no longer be able to return to this plan."

Yeah, guess we are not grandfathered in. Not as big of a deal for me since I only have the 1 DVD out at a time plan.

You might look at Blockbuster, they have similar rental plans and don't charge extra for Blu-Ray.

I signed up for their two week trial today. They also ship games under the plan!

The only catch is that Blockbuster could go at any time.

I'm another consumer who has to pay a little bit more because they want to expand their services.

But that doesn't really anoys me as much as they charging me extra for blu-ray, I mean the big guys decided that blu-ray is the way to go for HD, almost everybody is making their movies, tv shows, etc in HD, we switch to digital signal over the air so we could watch it in HD, HDTVs prices are low(er), and they still want to charge us for watching the movies in HD? They should be charging us extra for DVDs instead of Blu-ray.

I was thinking about looking into Blockbuster too, but every single store here is going out of bussines, and that's not a good sign.

$9.99/month is the regular price now, it used to be $8.99/month.
