UPS has lost their collective minds sometime in the last few years. If anything is shipped using their service, you get only three delivery attempts from them before they proceed to ship the package back. They did this a little over a month ago with a self-powered 7-port USB hub I ordered from NewEgg. Now they are doing the same thing with software that I ordered from Amazon.com. They have made the second delivery attempt today with a third attempt to occur tomorrow. The box labelled "Sender requested a signature to confirm delivery" has been checked on the attempt notices and this means that the driver must receive a signature and hand the package(s) to a person. This means I can't just sign the delivery notice and leave it at the door for them to deliver the package.
But the madness doesn't stop there. Under "Service Attempts" on the back of the notice it states:
-UPS makes up to three delivery attempts (excluding Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays). UPS reserves the right to return the package to the shipper after three delivery attempts.
-To prevent your package (s) from being returned to sender, or to make alternate delivery arrangements before the final attempt is made, go to ups.com or call 1.800.833.9943. If you'd like to pickup your package(s) today at a UPS location, your request must be received by 7:00 p.m.
Now, when you call the 800 number or go to their website, there is no way to make alternate arrangements for delivery as the phone number leads you through a very limited number of options (none of which is a way to make alternate delivery arrangements) and the website tells you that your request for making alternate delivery arrangements cannot be processed at this time. When the hell did UPS become so unfriendly to the customers that they are supposed to be serving? I will be using FedEx for my package deliveries in the future.

In all honesty, much as we frequently need to use them, UPS has sucked hard for a good long while now. There are plenty of horror and anger stories abound in this forum regarding UPS. Occasionally FedEx as well, but usually UPS. Could be worse, could be DHL. *shudders*

First off, I would like to thank hackman for his helpful suggestion and link. I was finally able to contact an agent and arrange to pick up this package from Amazon tomorrow evening after work.
As for DHL, I do not believe they are used in this country anymore, except when NewEgg uses DHL Smartmail as their "EggSaver Shipping" method, and I have never had a problem with that as it is tendered to USPS at some point and USPS manages to deliver the package and/or packages without requiring a damned signature at all.

DHL is still used in the USA, it just sucks, lol.

UPS always just leaves the box at my house if no one is there. At my old location, they wouldn't, but that's probably because we lived near some apartments with a very high crime rate. Honestly, the UPS guy that always delivers to my house (always the same guy) is a real nice guy, and no one gets my stuff to me faster than UPS. Only thing is they never fail to beat the stuffing out of my packages... I'm lucky nothing has been DOA due to shipping damage.

my UPS he knows i will be here when i have to sign for something. if i dont he hides it on my carport (he takes random items and sets it on the package to make it look like its been there). and they call to make sure i will be home the next day for expected delivery that needs signed. they do make sure to test the tensile strength of some of the boxes but so far so good.

I prefer FedEx to UPS because they are much faster. If a package is ordered from NewEgg at the same time. The FedEx would get here 1st. I UPS package would sit some where for a day or so then move out.

Sign a paper with UPS saying you don't need to sign for it. And unless the shipper requests it, you will not have to sign for it.

I think the UPS deliverers are quite good in my area. Versus FedEX, though, i'd say its a tie for me between the two carriers. FedEX in my area shows up at 9-10am, while UPS shows up at 3-4pm in the afternoons. strange some of you have to sign for it, but they usually doorbell ditch or be sneaky ninja-like by the time i get to the door, they are gone.

both carrier companies are apparently seriously inconsistent with their methods. can't say that i have had a bad experience yet though.

Just leave a note saying that you need not sign for packages. Unless the shipper really wants you to, you don't. My son's IPod was the only thing in several years I have had to sign for from either company.

I used to live in a big condo (100+ units) and UPS came by to deliver some stuff that I had ordered from Neweff and the wife ordered from QVC one day while we were gone.

They just gave it to some lady who happened to be in the lobby and said she'd take it. Seriously. She didn't even pretend to be us, just signed her name "Clarice" which wasn't on either of the packages and we have no idea who she was, might not have even lived there, and walked away happily with ~$250 worth of stuff. She probably doesn't even know what a Radeon 5750 is, but she has one now!

It just blew my mind they'd happily hand over packages to just anyone who happened to be in the lobby at a friggin apartment building. I asked them to check IDs from now on, but they said to do that, they would need to make that the policy for the entire building, which would require HOA approval

At least we got a refund.

Oh ya, and just a few weeks ago when I got my new reciever, they dropped it off with my father-in-law who was in the driveway. No signature, and the online tracking number said "left with man in driveway." No shit.

You can leave a signed piece of paper (Post-It) with your signature on it and they can leave it on your property. If I say "leave it in the Garage" too, it ends up in the garage nicely stacked out of the way and everything. By the second attempt, you can usually call them and have them drop back by if they're still out on a route too.
