So, I get this letter in the mail. Well, letter is perhaps not the best way to describe it, it is designed to look like a bill titled "Notice of Renewal/New Order" for two installments of $49.98 for a two-year subscription for MaximumPC. Fifty bucks for a subscription that I can get on-line for fifteen--what a rip-off.

Obviously, this is a scam from some "independent subscription agent."

This particular scumbag is doing business alternatively as Publishers Billing Exchange and/or Orbitial Publishing Group at 216 Lemmon Dr #357 Reno, NV 89506. Yeah, that's right, in the back of the UPS store.

So, I was thinking, I would warn all you good folks to avoid this scam. Woof!

Then I got to thinking....Hey, how do they know I subscribe to this august publication? I'm afraid I'm left with the conclusion that MaxPC has sold us out. Tell me it aint so...

I don't know much about what's going on, but I can tell you that this has happened to all of the publications based from Future Publications, and that at least MacLife has already warned subscribers of the scam. I would imagine a warning is forthcoming from MaxPC too, but I have no knowledge of what is going to be done to address the scam.
Obviously for now I would suggest anyone who gets any offers from any of those groups to ignore them and be on the lookout for any suspicious-looking renewal offers.

Same kind of tactics found in Singapore also!

And sometimes, these agents/ sub-contractors buys database from individual rpoviders eg Mobile phone, ISP etc and called you out of no where!

It's not new, we're flooded about every other year, a couple threads similar to this pop up, and then we wait another 2 years for another wave.

Here's mine from 2004
Are yours from United Publishers Network as well? Give them a call or letter to find out who's to blame before putting Future's head on a stick

Looks like we didn't have to wait two years. Same scumbags, same address, still no comment from MaxPC. :(
