I bought an MSI HD 4870 card last April based on a special offer of $30 MIR. I figured that with the $30 back the card was going to cost me $129 and that at the time was a real good deal. I received the card and made sure that I had everything in order before mailing it back. The process was painful as I had to register with MSI on line and provide them with evidence that I had purchased the card legally. You have to register on line to get a code or number that you will use later . After that I had to cut the little bar code off the box and send together with copies of invoice and a few other information. According to the instructions the MIR was supposed to be back withing 90 days. Well, six mths later I'm still waiting for my rebate.

I decided to check with MSI but their site does not have any links that I could see where you could verify MIRs. I then looked on line and saw another MSI offer with the same $30 MIR and I clicked on the PDF coupon link and that took me to the rebate instruction page. This page had a link to the rebate status site ( finally ) and I was able to check my rebate status using my email address and zip code.

To my surprise my MIR was rejected because I did not include evidence of an invoice. This is complete BS. I submitted a photocopy as requested and everything else that was asked for. I am completely convinced this is false advertisement with the sole intention to lure you into purchasing their product and after that they will give you some sorry excuse and blow you off.

I've heard some people who received their rebate on time but I also heard numerous screw ups in the process. As it is right now, MIRs are not for me. The amount of time wasted registering at their site and then collecting the evidence of purchase and mailing it to them is not worth it.

and this is why I tell people not to treat the MIR like it's the actual price

in semi-defence of MSI they probably don't run the MIR scheme, most businesses outsource that to another company that specialises in that sort of thing. It's all very shady, there was a report about one of these companies recently that said they wouldn't send a check until somebody complained.

It's time for consumers to fight for their rights and put an end to all rebate offers. Sale prices up front just like they use to be. In my mind this is just as bad as the credit industry abuses. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't the ones that came up with the whole rebate concept.

That is why I only look at MIR as a bonus and not a guarantee.

I got burned once from a $50 MIR from Newegg on an Acer laptop. And when I contacted both Newegg and Acer via email, both claimed each other as the responsible party. I also tried contacting the rebate company, but no contact information was available on its website. I basically blame Newegg for hiring a bad rebate company for not sending out the checks.

Newegg doesn't hire the company. That was done by Acer. The 'egg only passes on the MIR information that is given them.
