Hi Fellers...
I've loved your mag for the last several years.

I have what you would call an ancient system, an Asus A7N8X mobo, AMD 2200+ (1.8 Gb) 768 mbs of corsair ram CAS 2, an old 16 x dvd player, and a 52x, 32, 52 cd-rw. It's a frankenstein, as I built it with only the parts I wanted several years ago.

My system boots with 32 processes running (because AVG has 3 running at boot up.) I'm way high with pre-fetch at 403 mb, yet my system boots in approximately 20 seconds ONLINE. Is it bloatware that causes the systems you test to take so long to boot?

Bloatware does put you boot and down times a notch. (Im assuming your using Windows XP) Hit Run -> Msconfig -> Startup tab and see anything that you might not want to load at startup and uncheck it. Be careful of what you uncheck cause you might need it. If you want to go further than that, use Run -> Services.msc. A guide can be found here: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/service411.htm.

Dude, the OP has a system that boots in 20 seconds. He is asking why the PC's MaxPC tests take so long to boot compared to his much older computer. He obviously doesn't need advice on improving his boot times.

To OP, sounds like your rig is going into a sleep state when you hit the power off button instead of fully shutting down. I'd be quite surprised at a system booting in 20 seconds, especially with AVG installed.

Yeah, the fastest boot time I can get is with Ubuntu 8.10. I get to being online in about 45 seconds.
