After an exchange in the Hardware Haven (linky-linky) about possibly using a Quadro board in a gaming machine, I started wondering if the guys in the lab would do a vid card comparison between GeForce 6XXX boards and the latest Quadro boards.

Looking at the hardware specs between the 6600 & the QuadroFX 3400 yields a roughly equivalent set of specs--would they run Doom 3 or HL2 with roughly equal aplomb? What about a top-of-the-line Quadro board?

I did a quickie search on Google, but it turned up only 1 relevant hit--a discussion thread with no benchmarks.

Just wondering.

The modern workstation boards aren't suitable for gaming. When you try to run a game like Half-Life 2 on them, things just don't work right. For example, the Quadro FX 4000 that we used for the Apple Cinema Display test just wouldn't render water at all. I didn't have time to figure out why it did this though.

You're better off buying a gaming card if you want the fastest, best looking gaming images.

*Psst* Hey Will, did you get to see this thread? The FX's don't render the water correctly at all. Sorry for making you C&P this

Thanks, Will

Hearing the experience of someone who has actually had these cards on the bench is very helpful.

As I mentioned, their raw performance numbers appear similar.

Thanks for the input.
