On page 207 from the "Guide to Building A Dream PC" it states to enable PCI IDE BusMaster. And to install Windows Drivers. I have an Abit IS 7 motherboard with an Intel 865 chipset and the bios does have this feature as described. I am running IDE drives both HDD and optical. But, I find the following
1. Intel Busmaster IDE Support was discontinued in 2003
http://www.Intel.com/support/chipsets/bm/index.htm
2. Its successor apparently is called Application Accelerator but us unavailable for newer Intel chipsets such as the 865 unless you are running a raid or matrix storage technology which I am not

As far as I can see, this feature is useless to me, or am I wrong

I don't remember the exact comment you mentioned, but I think I know what you're talking about.

Since the application accelerator went RAID only, it doesn't really apply to Intel chipsets. However, installing the IDE busmaster drivers is crucial for most non-Intel chipsets.

Mr. Smith is my dad, my name's Will :)

I can't imagine that turning bus mastering off would be a good thing. I'd leave it on.
