Something I either didn't see (I skimmed through this month's issue admittedly) or isn't there, there's a problem with upgrading to Windows 8.1 that some users may face. In my case, I upgraded from Windows 7 to 8, then to 8.1. Upgrading to 8.1 inadvertently causes the Refresh/Restore feature to break. It reports "some files are missing" or similar

Cause
Spoiler: show
The Restore/Refresh feature relies on a special file in the Windows directory. I believe the extension is .esa, but either way. It's a 4GB file and I'm guessing it's basically an ISO copy of Windows. Apparently this doesn't get updated when you upgrade to Windows 8.1, as it's still there.

Solution
Spoiler: show
Mostly taken from somewhere off the net, I forgot :<

  • Get a copy of the Windows 8.1 ISO. To do so...
    • Go to http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... t-key-only
    • Download the Windows 8 (yes, the original!) installer
    • Once downloaded, open it up, input your Windows 8 CD key, and close it as soon as it starts to download the ISO.
    • Now download the Windows 8.1 installer
    • It should resume downloading, and instead of getting the Windows 8 ISO, it gets the 8.1 ISO.
  • When the ISO is done downloading, select the option that'll you want to keep it as an ISO file.
  • Burn the ISO onto a DVD or create a USB boot disk
  • Any time you want to refresh/restore, insert the DVD or USB boot disk! (Also do this anyway right afterwards as a sanity check. Windows will ask you to confirm so you don't need to worry about breaking anything)
