OS
Firewall
Antivirus
Spyware Scanner
Defragger (could be part of OS)
Word Processor
CPU Cycles Donator
Any Graphic Adventure Game

Looking for specifics? That could easily get daunting, as each category has SEVERAL capable options. Mine are:

Windows XP Pro
ZoneAlarm (router for hardware)
AVG Pro
Spybot and Adaware
Diskkeeper Pro
OfficeXP
Folding At Home
Monkey Island

and of course there's various other user specific essentials (and non-essentials) on my system, such as CuteFTP Pro, Photoshop, Sandra, Nero, Roxio, Crazy Browser, Scanner Software, Ghost, and the list goes on.

I would like to add a few personal favorites, although One4yu2c covered most areas, when i redo a pc for friends, i always add:

Trillian
KillAD (if they use IE)
PowerArchiver
PDF Reader 2.2
StartupCPL
Regsupreme
WNTIPCFG.EXE
Memory and CPU Observer 2.3 (its so tiny when minimized)
TweakUI
Cacheman

BTW i love posts like this, fishing for cool new programs you might be missing out on is always fun.

I'm curious to know how you got Monkey Island running on a WinXP machine? Would that be the 256 Color floppy disk version, or the rereleased CD version?

Actually, the only one I've ran on XP is Escape From Monkey Island. I haven't tried replaying the original (and I have the floppy version). Curiously though, I HAVE gotten the original Maniac Mansion to run, as well as the Leisure Suit Larrys.

Have you tried installing Monkey Island on XP?

Man, would LOVE to have the Larry's!! I only have LL7 - Love for sale. Can you still get them?

I've also posted a simple question in the Games area with Redneck Rampage that I'm hoping will help me learn how to emulate. I'm usually a few year behind on this sort of thing. I had moral issues back then, but I guess now it's ok? Hell, if they don't make it anymore...
