On page 58 of the December 2012 issue the article Improve your Wi-Fi Signal has the worse advice someone can give. It’s obvious the writer knows very little about the subject. The author says “Find an area with some empty space, or a quiet channel, and write down its number.” This is exactly what you do not want to do in the 2.4GHz band. You see in the USA you can only use channels 1, 6, or 11. This is because they are the only channels that have enough space between them to limit the interference with each other. If say you pick channel 4 because it is nice and quiet what you have now done is screwed over users of channel 1 and 6 with interference. You on channel 4 will be getting interference from both channel 1 and 6 or anyone else that picked a bad channel like 2-5. This is because 2.4GHz uses 20MHz wide channels they did not build the channels with this spacing in mind. If you turn on 40MHz wide channel in 2.4GHz you have just taken up the whole channel range and will get interference from every channel. This can work if the spectrum is pretty clean but something to take into account if you want to do this you’re better off in the 5GHz channels.. Hopefully this helps explain why the above is wrong and also why the stupid auto select feature should never be used. Wi-Fi would work better if people stick to channels 1, 6, 11 and be good neighbors, instead of being a bad neighbor and picking a channel right in the middle of everything.
