theres a small problem with your HTPC build in the june 2011 issue. it uses the Intel integrated GPU, which still cannot output true 23.976 Hz video. it outputs 24.000 Hz. this results in a judder every 40 seconds or so. there is a work around (it gives 23.973 Hz) that pushes the judder out to a few minutes (seven or so, I think) but its still there, and the work around may cause other problems such as audio sync issues.

this may not seem like a big deal, but it (to me) is very noticeable and very distracting. as this is presented as a 3D build one may assume it is intended for use with fairly high end displays and one would expect flawless video from it.

this may not be a deal breaker for many people. some may not notice it, mind it, or find it only mildly distracting. but on my HTPC with an ATI HD3870 (which also cannot do true 23.976 Hz output) driving a un46c7000 3d tv its pretty annoying on 23.976 Hz material.. which is a huge chunk of DVD/blu ray movie discs.

AFAIK only ATI 5xxx/6xxx series GPUs (and possibly nvidea 4xx/5xx?) can do 23.976 Hz.

of course I would be very pleased to be corrected on any or all of this before I buy a new card for my HTPC :)

never had any issues with my 8xxx nvidia graphics. been contemplating upgrading to an x10 or x20 card for some power savings. I'd be interrested to find out if they work perfectly as well.

thats interesting, my gtx 285 plugged into the same tv and running the same software (XBMC) judders too, maybe slightly worse.

what tv is it driving, and are you using reclock, audio resampling, anything like that. what playback software?

Not many TVs can display 23.976 (24 FPS) multiplied by an integer (48, 96, and 120 being the most common values). Most take 60 in, or if they can display 96 FPS they take 60 and remove the 3:2 pulldown then multiply the original 24 frames.

All the HQV 2.0 (HD) scores I've seen place the HD 3000 (integrated in the 2500K and 2600K) around 100 to 110.

The new Radeon HD 6570 scores around 201. While those scores tend to be subjective, these seem to be average scores. In the end the Radeon would have a lot more video features, including 23.976 output, as well as 3D support.

So what am I saying? If you're worried about it, substitute a Radeon 6570 (if you're only caring about video playback).

the HTPC Gordon did is billed as 3D ready, and most, probably all, 3D TVs do 23.976/24 Hz. sure many people settle for 60 FPS, but that loses the "film" look that I and the wife like. mine does do 23/24/60 and a bunch more (confirmed it by reading the tvs EDID), hit "info" on the tv remote and it will display "24 Hz" during 24 (23.976) fps content.

yup, certain ones in the ATI (err AMD) 6xxxx series seems to be best for HTPC use at the moment.

thats the point: you cant. with the build Gordon did that Im commenting on he mentioned it runs pretty warm as is, adding a 6570 to it might send it over the top heat wise. and definitely power wise, its a 120 watt PSU. it would need a bigger PSU, more cooling and an add on card.

Id be interested in any tweaks Gordon may have for it.

been using xbmc for the past year or so. before that was Mythtv, but mythtv menus suck. I'm driving a Vizio plasma TV at 720P. I know it's a crap brand, but it was the best in our pricerange for picture quality.
