My brother in law just showed up with his computer. Wont boot into windows. I asked him what he did last and he was playing with the "cacls" command. I put the drive in my computer and can not access anything on the drive. I was able to run chkdsk and get to the drive with the command prompt, but i have no clue what the cacls command does. Im reading on it right now and its a little confusing as to unlocking the files. Anyone use this before and can give me a command line to unlock his drive? Thanks!

Sounds like you need to get him to tell you exactly what he did with cacls.

I found the batch file he made. He forgot to use a certain option and locked himself from all the files. I cant boot into windows or safe mode. Tomorrow I will load a XP Boot CD and see if a repair can be done that way once im logged in as admin. Learn something new everyday, lol.

I asked what he as doing. Said he was trying to make the batch file so he could embed it in a movie, then send it to his buddies at there next LAN party, get full access to there drives and then he wanted to change there backgrounds and startup pictures. Kids these days....I told him that it serves him right for tryin to mess with other people.

I would think you could somehow get back in with cacls and reset it?

Or do you need to be logged into windows to do this?
