I'm finally getting a new computer, and I needed some input. This is what I'm planning on:

-AMD Athlon 64 3000+
-TURBO X-INFINITY Case 420W W/ WINDOW & LCD Temperature Display
-Super Alien 500 Watt See Through Power Supply w/ Fan Speed Control
-12" COLD CATHODE NEON LIGHT SOUND ACTIVED (Blue)
-ASUS K8V SE Deluxe VIA K8T800 Chipset AGP8X w/LAN,USB2,IEEE,&Audio
-1024 MB PC3200 400MHz DDR MEMORY
-Western Digital 160GB 7200RPM ATA 100 8MB Special Editon
-ATI Radeon 9600SE 128mb (Just using a card I have laying around the house)
-PIONEER DVR-107 DUAL FORMAT 8X DVD±R/±RW + CD-R/RW DRIVE
-SONY 52X CD-ROM
-Creative Labs SB Audigy-2 ZS 7.1
-SILVERSTONE EUDEMON SST-FP52 LCD DISPLAY FRONT PANEL
-AMD ATHLON64 CERTIFIED CPU FAN & HEATSINK + 2 EXTRA 3-COLOR LED CASE FANS
-1.44 MB FLOPPY DRIVE
-Round Cable Upgrade for Hard Drive, Optical Drive & Floppy Drive

I'm using http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/ to build this computer. What are your suggestions and do you think this will run all of the newer games smoothly? Also, when LongHorn comes out will it work well with that as well.

Thx!

Looks good, but you aren't going to get crap for framerates on a 9600 SE. Unless you are planning an upgrade very soon, I strongly recommend a better videocard.

My year and a half old rig will stomp all over that one in games....

Yeah I purposely overkilled in power so I can upgrade to a ATI Radeon X800 in about 2 months. The big issue here is $$$. What kind of performance you think I''l be getting as far as Unreal Tournament 2004, Far Cry, etc.?

Other than the video card it looks good.

Should do ok in UT2k4 with medium details and say 1024x768 resolution (no problem once you upgrade video cards though).

Far Cry is pretty demanding, so my guess is you'd have to jack the details down pretty low (again, video card).

I couldn't find any links to reviews with those games, by my guess is 640x480 with meduim to low detail would net you barely playable framerates (by my standards).

Like I alluded to before, the 9600SE's are crap. Your CPU has that much memory bandwidth.

No.

Game speed at the kind of resolutions a modern gamer *should* be playing at is almost entirely a function of your videocard.

As a gamer I have found it's advantageous to buy $70-170 CPU's and $200-400 graphics cards.

isn't it a bad time to get a socket 754 when 939 is right around the corner?

true infact sock 939 is already out, but it only supports 939 pin processors only the FX series so far supports 939 which suck because the FX-53 costs about $700

S939 is alread out and shipping in volume.

And no, it's not a bad idea since both sockets will co-exist for a while and server as segmentation for AMD's Athlon 64 produt line.

Plus, the lowest speed grade S939 CPU costs ~$500, eating up half of his entire budget.

You may want to ditch the SONY 52X CD-ROM and go for a DVD-ROM    nudge, nudge, nudge!!!

Yeah...
Well he already has a DVD burner but it would make more sense to just get a DVD-ROM since they run around $30 anyway...

Ive played Farcry, UT2004 and BHD on the 9600SE and it plays fine. Obviosuly with games like Farcry the vid settings have to be at normal, but it is very playable on a 9600se.

you will get better performance with slower cpu and faster video card than the other way around. the best card you can afford. far cry made me cry, my 5700ultra ddr2 dxp super mid range card, sucked, i didnt pay that kind of money to turn it all off, i want it all on, so i bought a raedon 9800pro128 and "now" im happy it benches better than my sons 5900, and the 5950 mod wasnt enough either. point all the new games are going to be eye candy + I cant believe that 9600 will even play far cry with the 5700 i was swimming, even turning candy off i had to stop i couldnt make forced to buy raedon. which is not as good on call of duty as the 5700.

if you dont need a system this very instant i'd wait till the end of summer for PCI Express to come out and get a vid card that'd go along with that. it'll definitally help in the long run of upgrading with a PCI-X slot. but yet again you'd have to wait.

Try not to mix up PCIE and PCI-X. Different birds entirely. Hell, I had a PCI-X board years ago:p
