Hi, I was hoping someone could give me suggestions on building a computer under $1,200 for LAN parties. It would need a decent graphics card (better than a Radeon 9600SE 128mb), ethernet ports, sound card, HD, mobo, etc. I would prefer 64bit cpu, but P4 are just as good for me. Suggestions on system setup would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You!

Here's what I would build for ~$1200 (all prices from newegg):

Antec Aria (SFF case, takes mATX motherboards)
MSI K8TM-ILSR Socket 754 motherboard.
Athlon 64 3000+
1GB (2x512) Corsair Value select PC3200
120GB WD hard drive
NEC ND-2500A 8X DVD-RW
Audigy 2 ZS.

Total: $822

I intentionally left out the videocard, since that's a bit volatile currently. If you're buying it tomorrow, I'd recommend a vanilla GeForce 6800. They cost about $300. If you aren't buying for a month or so, I'd wait until the X800 Pro/6800GT's come down to your price range. Failing those, a 9800 Pro is always a good choice for $200, just don't expect 1600x1200 goodness with DX9 titles.

The Aria *may* not have the juice to power an X800/6800GT, but unless you actually try it, there's no way to know.

Thx! I'll look into that, I have an extra Radeon that I could use for a few months. Any more suggestions?

just get a reputable brand name (antec, pc power and cooling, enermax, etc)

BAH!

There's enough rice in this world without polluting lan parties!

"Please note this board does not come with Plastic Heatsink Retention Bracket" Is that an issue? I'm going with the LANboy case and a Antec 480W Power Supply with Blue LED Fan. Also whatever the "stock" cooling that comes with the LanBoy. I decided with a Creative Labs Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS PCI Sound Card & a 256mb Sapphire Radeon 9600.

Only if you're going to use the stock HS/F. You can call newegg and they'll get you the part to add in if you want though. Otherwise, they aren't too tough to find. But aftermarket HS/F's come with their own mounting items. OMG! We never mentioned an Athlon64 cooler! I like thermalright, but can't find any that they state are compatible with that board.

How about $12 more for the A2 ZS Gamer? May be worth the extra cash if you don't have some of those titles.

I'd recommend the 9800 Pro, unless you are going to replace it soon. The 9600's just don't (IMO) cut the mustard.
