I went through 3 Maxtor 200GB SATA drives. They got so hot that I couldn't hold them for more than 30 seconds at a time. Keep in mind, this is in my basement where temperatures were hovering around 60 (It was winter here in Minnesota).
So, three of them burnt up. A Maxtor 120GB SATA drive I put in a customers machine fried as well. Those were the first Maxtor drives I had ever purchased, and the last. Sure the RMA process was great, the customer service was great, but the products were shit.
Believe it or not I was a huge fan of the IBM Deskstars. I still have 6 of them in service today and haven't had a single issue with any of them 30GB all the way to 80GB. So I understand that I may have gotten just a few rotten drives, but I'm not going to go 4 months without a stable machine again.
Plus, the Maxtor drives are loud ... sure they're fast, but they're loud, IBM drives were pretty noisy too, but not quite as bad. The Western Digital drives are nice and quiet and haven't failed me yet. How bad can a company that makes the Raptor be after all
