I'm just about to head off to college and I have been confronted with a problem. I learned everything i ever learned about computers on the old maximum pc forum, and i figured this would be the place to get my questions answered this time also (didn't know the forum changed and my password wasnt saved anymore, but oh well, just made a new name for now). I need a laptop for college, and I need the most power and best graphics for my money. Originally I was going to go with a HP pavilion with a 1.7Ghz Pent M, 60gb HD, 64MB ATI mobile radeon 9200, and a better resolution screen for about $2000. I somehow ran into an Acer notebook, Acer aspire 2025 on Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDe ... 119&depa=3

It has 1.8Ghz Pent M, 80GB HD, same ram, XP Pro, Radeon Mobility 9700 w/ 128MB, and the whole wireless bundle of standards. This all comes to 2200. This is my dream laptop people. But heres the only thing that could shatter it, me having constant headaches with this laptop all thru college. What are all your opinions on Acer products/notebooks? And if you all were in my position what would you do? Thank you

there's a 1 year warranty on that acer. you might want to get a longer warranty, in case anything happens during your college years.

also, abs computers offers notebooks that are in the same price range. go to abscomputers.com to check them out.

Get a Dell (Dude!) or HP/Compaq notebook. When it comes to notebooks, don't fuck around. Get something good.

I said no.

I think you could spend your money on something better...doesnt have to be a Dell but there are better notebooks for $2200.

Definitely go Dell. I bought the 5150 about 9 months ago, and its still an excellent laptop. They have great service and support (I've never talked to one indian guy) and it has decent gaming capabilities.

i have a bias against dell...i don't know, it seems that every dell system ive seen (disincluding notebooks) turn to hell after a few months time. Plus for the price, there are better performing laptops. I took a look at the ABS systems and they look very nice. Do most people with laptops buy a extended warrenty/service package??

Get a Dell. I'll be heading off to Penn State for college end of August and I'll be getting a Dell. Sure Alienware, Voodoo-PC laptops are a little faster but your pay thousands more for that extra 10 fps or 6 seconds off of transfering files. Not worth it in my opinion.

There's really 2 choices Dell Inspiron 8600 or XPS.

XPS

(+)

1. Biggest baddest mofo ever. Performance is better then some desktops.
2. Features best mobile graphics card out, Radeon 9700. Great gaming.
3. Tons of ports, 15.4" 1920x1600 UXGA screen.

(-)

1. Battery life sucks due to P4. 86 minutes battery life when watching a DVD movie, can't even finish it. Sucks on airplanes, have to use both of your batteries to watch a 3 hour movie.
2. A little heavy, not as portable as other laptops but XPS is meant as a DTR(Desktop Replacement).
3. Depending on how much you plan on hauling your laptop to classes around campus the XPS might be a pain to bring around.

Inspiron 8600

(+)

1. Pentium M 2.0GHz performs near P4 2.8GHz+.
2. Battery life last 3 hours+.
3. Good graphics card 128 MB Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo, play any game out today but don't know about HL2 or Doom3.
4. Same 7200 RPM hard drive and 1920x1600 UXGA screen as XPS.
5. Much more portable then XPS and still plays games no problem.
6. Can actually finish watching a 3 hour movie without using 2 batteries on airplane.

(-)

1. Not as fast as the XPS because of 400MHz FSB, single channel memory, no hyper-threading that the P4 has.
2. Graphics card isn't fastest out and not sure if it will handle next generation games.

It comes down to what you want, both come out to be about the same price. If you want desktop performance, plan to keep your laptop in your dorm room most of the time, will have your laptop plugged in most of the time and not using batteries then the XPS is the one to get.

Inspiron 8600 is a good balance and you have to love the battery performance but it doesn't feature the 9700 Radeon that the XPS has.

Like I said I'll be going to Penn State this fall and I still haven't made up my mind, XPS or Inspiron 8600. Both have trade offs. I want lots of battery power but I also want the best gaming performance. Only if Dell put the Radeon 9700 in the Inspiron 8600 then I would definetly know what I'd be buying.

If you go with Acer, go with the Acer Ferrari 3200, check out these specs:

* 1.6 GHz Athlon 64 2700+
* 512MB memory
* 80GB HD
* 128MB ATI Radeon 9700
* 15-inch TFT
* DVD+RW
* 802.11a/g
* Windows XP Home
* $1,999

Check it out on their website acer.com & this laptop was MobilePC's mobile choice. Plus, this laptop looks really cool.
