apparently the govt reads all emails that leave the country.

Let me guess... This is just one of a hundred things in the partriot act that none of the House or Senate read before signing?

I'd love to know how you think they do that. What technology do they use to, for example, intercept mail sent from my mail server (on my home PC) to my friends in Europe.

obviously i dont know exactly how they do that, but i saw a tv show (dont remember the channel, but i watch Discovery Channel, hisotry ch, g4 tech tv...so on one of those) about national secirity. that is what the head of national defense said

Hey man big brother is watching you. The data has to pass through a wire that leads out of the country somehow. There is a little mexican guy with a laptop that monitors the entire data traffic that leaves the 48 continuous U.S. from a Fiber Optic QWEST Optical Carrier 192 line. His IBM ThinkPad has a really big NIC and one helluva Snort/Packet Sniffer that monitors all SMTP and POP3 protocal traffic. Whatever he finds he writes a "help ticket" and that gets passed to some I.T. @$$hole who spends all day surfing internet forums providing crucial answers to lifes most demanding questions like "which video card to buy?" and "FAT32 or NTFS?" not to mention "Best CPU/MOBO combo?". Anyway back to the subject. While Desmondo scans TERABYTES of traffic a minute on his ThinkPad (which is overclocked) he has a filter setup to look for trigger words and phrases. These include

Natrually most of this traffic tends to generate from 64.191.196.129 so his job isn't that difficult. So in closing. Just be careful what you say in an e-mail. I personally shred every e-mail I send so that they can't track me. By the way do you know how to translate the following e-mail? I really want to send this guy $300 bucks but I don't speak ______

On the way from your mail server to Europe, your email is going to pass through several other mail servers. If Carnivore is installed at the location, they have a copy of it. I'm not saying they actually monitor email, but I wouldn't be so cavalier as to say they can't either.

Have you heard of Echelon?
