I'm going away to school next year and I need webcams for my family to keep in touch. I figured somebody would know a really good bang-for-the-buck webcam we can use for teleconferencing, as I'll be using a T3 and they've got high speed cable at home. Any suggestions?

I just modded a Logitek quickcam IM for astronomy use. It was about 30-40 bucks. I tested it around the house first. Its nice 30FPS video and the software has IM setups for MS, yahoo, and two others I can't think of. It comes with both a regular and notebook mount and one of those geeky ear /mic things that make you look like you are in the secret service.

There are better ones and there are cheaper ones - but make sure you get at least 30FPS video. You will be happy you did.

I really like my Logitech QuickCam Messinger webcam. It is available online and in a lot of stores, sets up quickly, and is of good quality. If you have good internet connections on both ends it should do nicely.

It will do 30FPS at 640

~$40 dollars with microphone and both mounts included in box. It will do megapixel 1280 snaps (I think - at least 1024).

Check out my moon pick in the modders folder (Astronomy mod). That a still shot and video frames are similar. And I reduced the res and color for the forum.

Logitech Quickcam IM

If you want to go even better, the logitech pro 4000 is the best ($100)
and I hear the Logitech orbit is nice (same CCD as the IM I think - but it has fancy tracking stuff for vid conferenceing - ~$100)
