I have a Crucial M4 SSD hooked up to a Gigabyte z77 UD5h mobo with a 3570k and 24x DVD drive and am a little confused how to make the best use of the ports. The board has both the Intel Z77 SATA controller and a Marvell one. When I put the build together plugged the SSD and drive up to the Marvell 6GBs ports because there was a spare port for later and I figured it would be faster if the manufacturer of the SSD controller matched that of the SATA one. I'm having second thoughts now- every SSD test I've seen recommends the Intel controller.

What's the faster controller for my M4 SSD?

Should I hook up my DVD drive to a 6GBs port?

What is TRIM, exactly?

If I wanted to change controllers, what would be the procedure?

The Intel one. I have a Marvel controller for two SATA III ports, I found out they don't perform very well (330MB/s vs. 550MB/s)

No. The DVD drive is slow as hell, and nothing's going to change that.

It prevents the OS from writing over areas marked "unused" in the file system. When the OS deletes a file, it doesn't actually erase it off the drive. It just marks the space it took up as "unused". If the OS were to write to the first available block of space in the drive, it would wear out the SSD faster in those areas while others remain untouched.

It's a form of wear leveling.

Just switch where the drive connects to.
